Moths in the Isles of Scilly, August 2003

Diary   /   Home

Below are some of the moths that I took photos of in the Isles of Scilly this year, they were either seen in the hedgerows or on the heathland or taken on the wall of the house where they were attracted to the light. As I am able to identify others they will be added. I trust that I have identified them correctly.

early thorn moth, selenia dentaria

european corn-borer, ostrinia nubilalis

flame shoulder, ochropleura plecta

light brown apple moth, epiphyas postvittana

maple pug, eupithecia inturbala

red twin-spot carpet, xanthorhoe spadiceari

Both of these pictures are of the same Red Underwing Catocala nupta, at the left it is at rest, to the right it has been disturbed and displays its true beauty.

rush veneer, nomophila noctuella

rusty-dot pearl, udea ferrugalis

schreckensteinia festaliella

setaceous hebrew character, xestia c-nigrum

small square-spot, diarsia rubi

white chouldered house moth, Endrosis sarcitrella

This yellow-tail, Euproctis similis, displays the reason for it's name when playing dead and as a defence mechanism.

ruby tiger, Phragmatobia fuliginosa, at rest

with forewing pulled up to reveal hind wing

with wings pulled back to display abdomen

Pyrausta despicata

cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae

Thiodoa citrana

plume moth Emmelina monodactyla

Yellow Shell  Camptogramma bilineata
