Moths seen in the garden to date A-C, D-F, G-M, N-Si, Sh-the end

August 2006

August has begun with a bang. I managed to identify 23 species last night and if that were to continue throughout the month I should be able to exceed last years recorded species. There may have been a slow start to the year but the hottest July on record seems to have brought the moths out at long last! This morning, 1st August, the weather is welcomely cooler and some showers are forecast, there was rain last night but not such a deluge as the storm we had last week, so the ground should be able to soak it up and the plants benefit.

Although most of the moths were the ones I would expect there was a new species to the garden, the Phoenix, Eulithis prunata, which I had only seen before in Ireland.
