Thursday,
28th August, and disappointment on returning home from a holiday in the Isles
of Scilly where we were inundated with moths every evening, pictures of which
I will add to the site as I have time, to discover only one and that
extremely uninteresting on our outside wall last night.

Just to whet your appetite here are
two of my favourites and probably two of the most easily identified. To the
left is the angle shades moth, phlogophora meticulosa, and to the
right the green carpet moth, colostygia pectinaria. There is also a
page of birds that are found in the islands.

Saturday,
and the end of another week. The weather has turned considerably cooler and
at last we have had some rain, although the pond is very low at the moment. I
realise that in my search for moths perhaps I have neglected the birds a
little but they soon discovered that we had returned and that the feeders
were once again full. This little coal tit is one of the most regular
visitors. Fortunately the squirrels do not appear to have been quite so quick
and have not been at the bird food at all as yet.
  There
were a couple of moths on the garage wall yesterday evening, so things on the
moth front are looking up. I think the one on the left of which there are 2
photos is a brindled green, dryoobotodes eremita, and the one on the
right a square-spot rustic, xestia xanthographa. I am going to have to
purchase a book!!
